TRADE COUNTER ASSISTANT (ASHTON-IN-MAKERFIELD)
Location: Ashton-in-Makerfield

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (7:00am to 5:00pm), plus Saturday overtime
Salary: £32,000 – £36,000 per year, based on a 47.5-hour working week. Saturday overtime is additional, with a rota of two Saturdays on and one Saturday off.

Our successful Ashton-in-Makerfield branch is currently looking for a friendly, dependable and customer-focused Trade Counter Assistant to join our team.
This is a customer-facing role with plenty of variety. You will support trade and retail customers with orders, product advice and day-to-day counter duties while helping the branch operate smoothly and efficiently.

Job Purpose
The Trade Counter Assistant is responsible for providing excellent service to trade and retail customers, processing orders accurately and helping customers select the right products for their needs.
The successful candidate will provide a friendly and professional service while supporting the day-to-day operation of the trade counter and wider branch.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service and Sales
Welcome and serve customers at the trade counter.
Respond to customer enquiries in person, by telephone and by email.
Identify customers’ requirements and provide appropriate product advice.
Build and maintain positive relationships with trade and retail customers.
Recommend and upsell relevant products where appropriate.
Resolve customer queries promptly and professionally.
Order Processing
Prepare quotations and process customer orders accurately.
Handle cash, card and account payments.
Operate the till and branch order-processing systems.
Check product prices, stock availability and delivery information.
Liaise with the yard and transport teams to coordinate collections and deliveries.
Process returns and refunds in accordance with company procedures.
Stock and Merchandising
Maintain stock displays and ensure products are presented effectively.
Keep the trade counter clean, tidy and well organised.
Assist with stock checks and replenishment.
Monitor stock levels and report shortages.
Help maintain accurate product and pricing information.
Support the receipt and checking of incoming goods when required.
Teamwork and Branch Support
Work closely with colleagues across the trade counter, yard and delivery teams.
Support the branch team with general duties as required.
Assist the Branch Manager with the efficient day-to-day operation of the branch.
Maintain a safe and welcoming environment for customers and colleagues.
Follow all company policies and health and safety procedures.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Essential

Desirable
Previous retail or trade counter experience.
Experience within a timber or builders’ merchant.
Knowledge of timber, construction materials or related products.
Experience serving trade customers.
Experience using electronic point-of-sale or merchant management systems.
