What is a picket garden gate?

Each timber garden gate in the ledged and braced Z-frame style is made up of vertical, evenly spaced pales or pickets, fixed to horizontal rails.

They are traditionally constructed from treated softwood and are finished with either flat, rounded, or pointed picket tops - depending on your preference.

As each picket is fixed with gaps between, it offers an open-boundary look that allows light and views to pass through, so they are often preferred by homeowners who want to make the most of the land around them.

Best uses for picket gates

  • Front garden entrances

  • Cottage gardens

  • To separate pathways and other decorative boundaries

  • Bording swimming pools or ponds

  • In uneven terrain, they can be adjusted to follow the gradient

  • In very exposed and windy locations, the open-slat design allows more air through, reducing wind load and blown fences

Standard picket garden gate sizes

  • 900mm x 1800mm (0.9m x 1.8m)

We would recommend the taller picket gates for gardens where security is more important, for example, if you need to keep children and pets in.

  • 900mm x 900mm (0.9m x 0.9m)

If you don’t need to keep anything in, the 900mm picket garden gate should be sufficient for boundary demarcation.

Picket gate specifications

  • Selected softwoods treated with high-quality preservatives

  • 100mm x 22mm sawn flat top pales, treated

  • 100mm x 36mm sawn treated rail

  • 0.9m/900mm width as standard

  • T/W grooved capping, treated

  • Mortice and tenon joints

  • Stainless steel screws

Considerations before installing a picket garden gate

Before ordering your picket gate, consider the following to ensure that you can put it in as soon as it arrives:

  1. What opening width do you have available to you?

  2. What height gate is required?

  3. What hinges and locks would be best for your needs?

  4. Would you prefer a treated wood for extra peace of mind?

  5. Will you be painting or staining your picket fence gate?

For order recommendations or bespoke advice on painting or staining your picket garden gate, feel free to contact NWTT - our experienced team would be delighted to help.

Are picket garden gates treated?

Unless otherwise stated and omitted for specification purposes, all outdoor timber products from NWTT come treated to offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Rot resistance

  • Insect resistance

  • A longer lifespan

For this reason, if you choose a treated timber, fence, or gate, you can expect it to last for 10 to 40 years with proper care and maintenance, compared to 2 to 5 years for untreated timber goods.
