Types of plasterboards

To suit such a wide range of industries and uses, plasterboards come in a variety of different types, including:

  • Insulated plasterboards

Offering space-saving thermal insulation, insulated plasterboards often include a rigid insulation material bonded on top of the gypsum plasterboard sheet.

This plasterboard and insulation integrated system streamlines construction and significantly improves thermal performance, helping reduce heat loss and could reduce energy bills.

  • Fire-proof plasterboard

A type of plasterboard, fire-rated boards offer fire-resistance, helping with compartmentation - an essential element for all types of buildings.

This offers enhanced safety, and when used with a completely fire-rated system, including screws, tape, and compounds, can give building users more time to evacuate.

  • Acoustic plasterboard

Designed to help stop impact and airborne noise transmission, acoustic plasterboard helps make spaces quieter and more enjoyable for all using them.

Normally thicker and heavier in construction, it can achieve better soundproofing through an increased mass.

  • Moisture-resistant plasterboard

Designed to keep out water, moisture-resistant plasterboard offers mould inhibition, improved air quality, and also assists with keeping rooms warm.

These boards are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and even on interior surfaces or exterior walls.

  • Foil-back plasterboard

Also useful for potentially damp environments and spaces where cold and warm elements meet, foilback plasterboards have a thin aluminium foil layer to create a vapour barrier.

This is essential for thermal insulation and moisture resistance.

Where is plasterboard used?

Common applications of plasterboard include, but are not limited to:

  • Walls and ceilings

  • Partition walls

  • Concealing services

  • Architectural features

  • Lofts and basement/cellers
