Types of plywood sheets

To suit such a wide range of industries, plywood boards have been developed with different uses in mind, so they come in different types, including: 

• Marine

This water-resistant plywood is suitable for use in wet conditions like boats and other marine applications. It’s not fully waterproof, but it's treated to resist water and is more resistant than standard exterior plywood. 

• Sheathing

This structural grade plywood is used for the walls, floors, and roofs of buildings due to its strength and stability. It’s resistant to splitting, cracking, and warping, making it suitable for both internal and external structural applications.

It can be used in subflooring, roof decking, and wall sheathing in timber frame construction - hence the name! 

• Hardwood plywood 

Plywood can also be made from hardwoods like oak, birch, or maple, and is often subcategorised by noting the source of the wood or wood type itself. 

Malayan hardwood is strong, durable, and has a fine, attractive grain, making it the go-to solution for furniture, cabinetry, and decorative panelling.

Likewise, Chinese poplar core plywood is a hardwood plywood produced in China, from eucalyptus or poplar. It’s versatile and can be used as a building material for various interior and exterior applications, and you might see boards intended for structural use. 

Common uses of plywood board

Sometimes referred to as ply wood, plywood sheets are a strong, versatile engineered wood product made from thin layers, or "plies," of wood veneer. 

It is built from layers of plies that are glued together with the grain of each adjacent layer rotated up to 90 degrees, which provides superior strength, stability, and resistance to warping, cracking, and shrinkage compared to solid wood.

As such, it has many varied uses, including but not limited to: 

• Construction

Structural framing, flooring, roofing, and formwork

• Furniture and interiors

Building cabinets and shelves, interior panelling, and doors. 

• Specialised uses

Marine applications, stages and sets, supporting transportation, creating crates and storage bins, or crafting outdoor furniture.
