Stair components you can safely swap

It’s important to know that not all stair parts are replaceable without a certain skill level, given the vast health and safety requirements a staircase must meet to adhere to UK Building Regulations.

For this reason, we recommend only replacing the following parts if you don’t have any formal training in this area:

Handrails or bannister rails
Stair spindles, balusters, or balustrade infills
Base rails or skirting rails under the bannister
Stair newel caps

If you are more experienced, you might also be able to replace the stair newel posts.

However, real care should be taken as they are structural parts, anchoring the handrail and balustrade, and may bear a structural load. This means replacing them incorrectly can compromise staircase integrity and user safety, potentially leading to an unsightly mess.
