Choosing softwood skirting

Because it is solid timber rather than a board product, softwood skirting can be sanded, filled and refinished rather than replaced, which makes it the usual choice for period restoration and for any run likely to take knocks. It takes paint and stain equally well, so the same profile suits a painted modern finish or a clear-sealed traditional one.

Stock heights run from 95mm through to 169mm in 15mm and 18mm thicknesses. Choose height to suit the ceiling height and the depth of the floor build-up, not just the look, and order matching architrave in the same profile so door surrounds and skirting runs line up.

Prefer a pre-primed finish?

Softwood needs knotting solution over any resinous knots plus a primer coat before topcoat. If you would rather skip that stage, our primed MDF skirting boards arrive factory-primed and ready for a topcoat in the same profile range, with no knots or grain to block out first.
