Types of garden gates

There is an almost endless variety of garden gates to choose from, including but not limited to:

  • Picket gates

Traditional and classic in design, a picket gate is made up of vertical boards or pickets attached to horizontal rails.

Usually, with a choice of rounded, pointed, or flat top pickets, these boards are spaced evenly apart and allow for open-view boundary protection. These can be less secure than other gate types.

  • Side gates

Used almost predominantly for a pedestrian entrance at the side of a house or garden, hence the name, side gates enhance security and privacy while maintaining easy entrance and egress.

Side gates can be timber, metal, or composite plastic, can be fitted with a variety of locks, and tend to be taller and, therefore, more secure.

  • Driveway gates

Often found in pairs and used to stop unauthorised access to a property’s entrance, driveway gates are considered incredibly secure.

This is because they can be used with many types of locks and security systems, including CCTV. Driveway gates can swing, slide, bi-fold, or be automatic, depending on the needs of the homeowner.

  • Decorative gates

These ornamental, style-based gates do allow for restricted access to a garden, for example, but are predominantly chosen for the aesthetic benefits they bring.

They can be carved, engraved, coloured, and include artistic elements like arched tops and latticed panels, all to add beauty, charm, or extra interest.

Materials used for garden gates

As a subset of timber garden gates, which are by far the most popular, homeowners can also choose from pressure-treated softwood, hardwood gates, and painted gates.

Pros

Cons

Pressure-treated softwood

  • Enhanced durability and longevity

  • Cost-effective

  • Low initial maintenance

  • Versatile

  • Easy to personalise

  • Environmentally friendly as it has an extended lifespan

  • Possibility of warping/splitting

  • Requires ongoing maintenance

  • Can have a green tint until the timbre treatment weathers

  • You can’t paint or stain a newly treated gate for 2-3 months

  • Not as durable as hardwood

Hardwood

  • Can last 30+ years if maintained

  • High resistance to rot and decay

  • Solid construction makes it more secure

  • Sustainably sourced hardwoods are eco-friendly

  • Higher initial cost

  • Requires ongoing maintenance

  • Increased weight relies on sturdy posts and hinges

  • Can split, warp, and twist over time

  • May need professional installation due to the increased weight

Painted wood

  • Highly personalisable

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Can protect wood underneath from UV rays and rotting from moisture

  • Painted timber is high maintenance

  • Incorrect pain use can damage not protect wood

  • Reuires large initial outlay of effort to prime and paint

Standard gate sizes

  • 900mm x 900mm, 1000mm, 1200mm, & 1800mm

  • 1800mm x 900mm, 1000mm, 1200mm, & 1800mm

  • 2100mm x 900mm, 1000mm, 1200mm, & 1800mm

Considerations before you buy a timber garden gate

Before you can choose the garden gate you like best, you will need to know a few things, such as:

  1. What opening width do you have available to you?

  2. What height gate is required?

  3. Are you prioritising style, safety, or finding a balance of the two?

  4. Do you have limitations around gate weight you need to consider?

  5. Would you prefer a treated wood for extra peace of mind?

At this point, you will have enough insight to choose the right gate for your space!
