What are decking spindles?
A handrail or balustrade is constructed from three main parts, not unlike a sandwich. First, the base rails are fitted, providing support for the spindles and structural stability for the whole structure once completed.
Next, the timber spindles, the vertical posts that connect the base rail beneath to the handrail above, are added. These add a decorative touch and also stop people, pets, and little ones from slipping through gaps.
Finally, the handrail is added on top - finishing the balustrade system and giving users a place to grip as needed.
Perhaps most often used and seen on staircases, deck spindles help to keep raised timber decking or patio areas safe and also generally improve their appearance, making them a design feature in your garden renovation.

Benefits of spindles for decking handrails
Beautiful designs
When choosing wood spindles, deck design will be at the forefront of your mind. As such, the team at NWTT have made it easy for you to choose spindles that will enhance your deck by offering a wide selection.
Choose between blank, square, turned, stop chamfered, Colonial, or Edwardian pine spindles - depending on what you are looking to achieve.
Plus, with a selection of compatible decking newel posts in stock, just because it's outdoors doesn't mean you can't match!
Safer decks
While you might not think it, raised decks or patios are actually covered under UK Building Regulations Part K to ensure users are safe from falling, collision, or impact. This includes the maximum gap between decking spindles and the necessary height of safety rails.
As such, pre-treated decking spindles are an essential safety aspect.
Durability, whatever the weather
Pressure-treated decking spindles offer greater resistance to rot, decay, insects, and moisture absorption, making them the perfect choice for outdoor projects.
However, while pressure-treated products are excellent, for complete weather resistance, we recommend using a water-repellent sealant or paint for maximum protection.
Choose any NWTT pine spindle type with 'green' in the product name for included pressure-treated protection from the elements, or apply Barrettine Creosolve (available in dark brown or light brown) once in place to stop the rot.
