What are railway sleepers?

As you might expect from the name, oak sleepers were traditionally used as railway supports, under the tracks.

While still in use by rail companies for this purpose, treated wooden sleepers like these are also a great choice for garden and landscaping projects, be that for DIY-home renovations or more long-lasting, construction jobs.

They come in a range of sizes, but can be easily recognised thanks to their impressive chunky look - which gives them the durability needed for structural and outdoor works.

The most common sizes include:

  • 200 x 50mm

  • 100 x 200mm

  • 125 x 250mm

  • Lengths from 1.2 to 2.4m, or more.

Are treated sleepers essential for outdoor use?

When considering wooden sleepers, garden use does bring the need for treatment to stop decay, mould, insect damage, water ingress, and UV-bleaching.

While it is possible to do it yourself, garden sleepers from NWTT are treated in either brown or green already, helping reduce the amount of prep work you need to do before you get started!

Just remember, you’ll need to apply an oil, paint, or stain every 12-18 months for continuing protection - we recommend Barrettine CreoSolve®, which is suitable for exterior use.

Possible applications of wooden sleepers

Garden sleepers are often used for:

  • Wooden sleepers for raised beds or planters

  • Retaining walls or terraces

  • Garden edging and borders

  • Steps

  • Outdoor seating

  • Pathway edging

  • Bespoke landscaping features

  • Play pits and sandpits

  • Pond perimeters
