Features of indoor and outdoor wood screws

  • Sharp point

  • Coarse, single thread or double threads

  • A shank designed to stop wood splitting during insertion

  • A variety of head types and drive types

This can include countersunk or non-countersunk heads, including a flat head, bugle head, hex head, or Pozidriv #2 (PZ2) head type.

  • A choice of screw lengths and diameters

The first number is the diameter of the screw shaft, while the second is the length of the screw. For example, screws can come in sizes such as 6.7 x 40 mm, 6.7 x 50 mm, 6.7 x 100 mm, or 6.7 x 150 mm.

  • Different pack sizes

This can be as small as a 4-pack or as large as a 50-pack option, depending on what you require.

Possible applications for heavy-duty timber screws

Also referred to as timber sleeper screws or timber decking screws, thanks to their vast range of applications. Common applications for wood screws include:

Structural tasks

If needed - as not all wood-based screws are designed for structural tasks - these durable products can offer a strong and stable connection for jobs like framing a house or building a deck.

General woodwork

Whether interior or exterior, timber sleeper screws can be used for a myriad of projects, including crafting, repairs, furniture making, and shelving.

Attaching hardware

For quick renovations or longer rebuilds, you can use timber screws for finishing tasks like applying hinges, handles, and locks to any wooden products, including doors, windows, and cabinets.

Exterior jobs

If your project is based outside or the end product will be used outdoors, choose structural or stainless steel screws, thanks to rust-resistant materials or coatings that are used in their manufacturing.

Are these structural timber screws?

Structural timber screws are different from their general counterparts in two ways - their appearance and their possible uses.

Heavy-duty timber screws usually come in a larger diameter, with deeper single threads, and often have washer-style heads for greater holding power. General timber screws, on the other hand, use more multi-purpose aggressive double threads.

Likewise, structural screws are designed to cope with load-bearing projects, such as building pergolas or decks, while general timber screws are not.
