What is 10mm rough-sawn untreated timber?
If this is the first time you've bought timber, it can be a bit of a minefield. Luckily, the name of each product is formulated to give clues:
-
10mm – This is the thickness of the timber range, leaving you free to choose the right length for your needs.
-
Untreated – Unlike treated timber destined for outdoor tasks, like decking or fencing, untreated softwood has not been chemically or pressure-treated to protect from rot/decay, fungal growth/mould, or insect attacks. For this reason, unless you treat it yourself, it's only suitable for indoor use or dry, covered environments.
-
Rough sawn – As it has been rough sawn, timber lengths have been cut to the specified lengths but have not been planed smooth, giving them a rustic and textured finish.
-
Ungraded – Ungraded timber is not suitable for load-bearing structural work, such as joists, beams, and lintels, and is best for decorative tasks.
-
Softwood – As a softwood, this rough-sawn timber likely comes from pine, spruce, or fir tree types.
