Financial Controller



Location: Ashton-in-Makerfield
Company: Northwest Timber Treatments Ltd
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:00am to 4:00pm)
Salary: £33,000 to £36,000, dependent upon experience

North West Timber Treatments Ltd is a well-established, family-owned timber and builders’ merchant operating across seven branches throughout the northwest.  The company has experienced significant growth over the last few years and is looking forward to further growth in the years ahead.

We are looking for an experienced and dependable Financial Controller to join our Head Office team in Ashton-in-Makerfield. This is a hands-on position suited to someone who has strong accounting ability, excellent attention to detail and the confidence to support the day-to-day running of a busy accounts team.  

The position will involve the direct supervision of existing accounts team and would be ideal for someone with the right experience who is looking to step up into their first controller/supervisory finance position.

Job Purpose

 

The Financial Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day transactional activities of the organisation, ensuring the integrity of financial records, maintaining robust financial controls, supporting the Finance Manager/Directors with strategic decision-making, and helping with compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Financial Reporting

  • Ensure accuracy of transaction within the companies accounting systems.
  • Support and supervision of the core accounting functions of Sales Ledger, Purchase Ledger and Bank Accounts
  • Support the preparation of board and executive reports.


Financial Control and Compliance

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of strong internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures
  • Support external audits and liaise with auditors.
  • Support the annual budgeting process.
  • Ensure effective management of debtors and creditors.
  • Provide recommendations to improve control and efficiency

 

Team Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop the existing finance team.
  • Promote continuous improvement within finance processes.

 

Business Partnering

  • Collaborate with branch managers to support financial transaction and trouble shoot issues.
  • Liaising with customers and suppliers.
  • Support business growth initiatives, acquisitions, and investment decisions.
  • Support banking relationships.

 

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Support the Development of financial systems and reporting processes.
  • Drive automation and efficiency initiatives within the finance and wider business systems.
  • Ensure data integrity across financial systems.

 


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

 

Essential

  • Accounting qualification and, or relevant experience. AAT level 3 or above.
  • Experience in a dynamic multifunctional finance team
  • ERP system experience (e.g., Genetics IQ, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365, NetSuite).
  • Excel and financial systems expertise.
  •  

Desirable

  • Experience in a finance supervision or controller role.
  • Experience within the relevant industry sector
