What side of the fence is yours?

Could you confidently identify which side of the fence is yours?

For most, the answer is probably not, leading to thousands of Google searches and 6.2 million disputes every year in the UK.

So, which side of the garden fence is yours? The fencing experts at NWTT reveal all – we think you’ll be shocked to find out!

Why nobody knows about boundary fencing

For decades, when asking ‘which fence is mine?’, left or right have been the expected responses – or perhaps, the smooth side is yours. However, it’s actually much more complicated than that.

There is actually no concrete way of knowing which side of the fence is yours just by looking at it – you need to check your property deeds and title plan.

Obtainable from Land Registry, these plans clearly label the side you own – and are responsible for – with a ‘T’ mark.

This also applies to detached properties, and you can even have fences that have a shared boundary, which is marked by an ‘H’ symbol on either side.

So, if you find yourself with a broken fence after storm damage or want to replace it with a more aesthetic option, you need to check your title plan to ensure you are investing in the right panels!

Which fencing is right for me?

Now you aren’t spending hours searching ‘which side garden fence is mine’ online, you can instead decide which replacement fence panels are for you! This is the exciting bit in our opinion!

To help you decide on new fencing, we’ve set out the next steps for finding your replacement fence.

Step 1: Measure up and check your fencing accessories

Most fence panels are made to standard widths of 6ft (1.83m) but can come in a range of heights depending on their style. However, if you or the previous homeowners invested in slightly fancier European fence panels, the measurements might well be a little different.

For this reason, before you choose your next panel, you need to know which will fit in the gap you have – so get measuring!

Similarly, you should be sure to check your fence posts, such as traditional concrete fence posts. While incredibly durable and long-lasting, they can sustain damage and need to be replaced if they can’t hold themselves up or support the panels on either side of them anymore.

Step 2: Choose your panels

Keep calm, this is the exciting bit – it’s time to shop for your replacement fence panels.

You can buy a like-for-like replacement of what you already have if you like your current style, or use this as an opportunity to revitalise your outside space with something new! We have something for every style or taste at NWTT.

  • For ultra-modern gardens

Considered more contemporary thanks to their sleek horizontal slats, slatted panels are ideal for glass and metal-type decor fans.

Also called Venetian fencing, it ensures privacy without stunted light or air flow, given the small, regular gaps left between the slats. This can also make them ideal for very exposed locations, as the gaps allow for increased wind resistance.

  • In more traditional homes

For a touch of the old world, what is more traditional than actual picket fences

Great for allowing almost uninterrupted views while maintaining border security, picket fences also have regular gaps for air and light flow. Plus, as they are generally shorter, they are great for front gardens, too!

Or, if picket fencing is a bit twee for you, why not stick with vertical weatherboard or waney lap panels? With a choice of vertical or horizontal slats, they hark back to bygone times while also keeping a little more privacy.

  • For those looking to make a statement

If you want your fencing to stand out, arched panels of European fencing are the investment for you!

Impressively constructed to include woven designs or undulating arches, they allow you to make a real statement to visitors.

  • For growers and the green-fingered

If your garden is your pride and joy, trellis panels can allow you to support your plants and also restore boundaries in one fell swoop.

Plus, thanks to the different styles, you can add trellis fans or small trellis sections to existing or plain fences to give them a bit of extra wow!
