OSB Grades Guide 

OSB – Oriented Strand Board – is an integral product for timber frame construction, structural flooring and roofing, wall sheathing, and more across the wider construction industry.  

But selecting the correct OSB board grades is essential for ensuring structural integrity, moisture performance, and long-term project success.

OSB 

OSB is an engineered wood panel manufactured by compressing layers of wood strands sitting at right angles (cross-oriented) with high-performance resins. 

This structure prevents the panel from bending, warping, or failing once in place, while also delivering excellent strength, stability, and load-bearing capabilities.

Defined by the European standard governing OSB performance, EN 300:2006, grades of OSB board include:

• OSB/1 - non-load-bearing, general purpose, dry conditions
• OSB/2 - load-bearing, dry conditions
• OSB/3 - load-bearing, humid conditions
• OSB/4 - heavy-duty load-bearing, humid conditions

This specific classification defines, classifies, and specifies performance requirements, delivering factory production control and product requirements for marketed OSB. Meaning every trade, no matter where they are purchasing from, gets the same quality product and can be sure of its applications, benefits, and performance.

As a harmonised standard, there has been an agreed legal and technical way decided across Europe that includes how to test and label OSB boards – effectively guaranteeing they are fit for purpose.

OSB 3 - The most common OSB industry standard

OSB3 are far and above the most widely specified OSB type across construction. 

OSB/3 offers reliable load-bearing structural support in humid conditions, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, including:

• Residential construction
• Structural flooring decks
• Roof sheathing 
• Stud walls 
• Garden buildings and extensions 
• General construction 

It can handle being exposed to some moisture, but not extreme conditions.

• Moisture-resistant doesn’t mean waterproof 

You will need to sand, prep, and seal OSB 3 boards to make them waterproof if required. You can use clear wood sealer, exterior-grade varnish, Bitumen coating, or exterior paint, depending on the spec/appearance required. 

• OSB texture can be hard to cover

Unlike plywood, which has a smooth appearance, you’ll need to remove the wax layer, clean and dust, seal the edges, apply 2-3 coats of oil-based primer, and then paint, using two coats.

• Keep water resistance intact 

If you are cutting water-resistant OSB 3 or 4 boards, you will need to sand and reseal the edges to maintain this resistance on all six sides.

• Maintain expansion gaps 

OSB expands more than plywood; be sure to leave a 3mm expansion gap to prevent tenting or buckling in humidity changes. 

• Label your boards 

It’s not always easy to tell apart different grades of OSB board, so it’s essential you check the printed grade information (often found on the edge or face of the panel) or group and mark your boards yourself when you pick them up from the supplier.
